This degree programme is run by the School together with staff specializing in politics.
At Stage 1 you take roughly two thirds of your modules from the School of Modern Languages, and at Stages 2 and 4 between half and two thirds, depending upon your selection of additional modules. The remaining credits are made up from a selection of politically based modules.
The practical language modules and the methods of teaching and assessment in this programme are the same as for the other degrees taught in the School. Students also select options from the full range of optional modules available.
The politics element of the programme in Stage 1 gives students an introduction to political thought, international politics and European political systems. Modules available at Stages 2 and 4 cover topics such as Britain and the European Union, the Third World in global development, citizen involvement in democracy, feminist political theory. Students will also write a Final Year dissertation on an approved modern languages or politics topic. Like all programmes in the School of Modern Languages, you spend Stage 3 abroad in a country where the language appropriate to your degree study is spoken.
