Modern Languages and Linguistics BA Honours

UCAS Code: QT19

This programme is a flexible way of combining languages with linguistics, and is run by the School together with the School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics.

At each Stage you spend two thirds of your time studying two languages from Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish (including at least one from French, German and Spanish) with the remaining one third of your time spent studying linguistics. The practical language modules and the methods of teaching and assessment for this programme are the same as for the other degrees taught in the School. Students may also select options from the full range of optional modules available within the School.

In Stage 1 the linguistic modules introduce you to the history and structure of English, language in society and the history of linguistic ideas. Options available at Stages 2 and 4 include phonology, syntax, child language acquisition, sociolinguistics, language variation and change, language evolution.

Like all programmes in the School of Modern Languages, you will spend Stage 3 abroad in a country or countries where they speak the language(s) appropriate to your degree study.
