The Centre for Physical Recreation and Sport (CPRS) stages a wide range of events linked to its three core functions of performance, participation and external engagement.
In Performance Sport events include the Stan Calvert Cup – the annual varsity match against Northumbria University and the Stewart Evans Memorial Rugby Match against Durham University. There are also a host of local, regional and national events that our University Sports Clubs take part in that we publicise via these web pages. For example, Newcastle University Boat Club (NUBC) competes in the Rutherford Head, National Head of the River Race and Henley Royal Regatta as well as a host of other regattas throughout the year.
The highlight of the Campus Sport Programme are the Intra Mural Cup Finals across all sports as well as the last few league games where teams battle in out to win the title, gain promotion or avoid relegation. The annual 7's tournaments in Term 3 are also exciting days in the programme.
The University stages a host of events that enable local businesses and alumni the opportunity to sample some of the University sports facilities. These include a corporate golf day and an alumni golf day at Close House Country Club, one of the finest parkland courses in the north of England. The centre also runs the Summer Business League which is an annual football tournament comprising of local businesses in and around Newcastle City Centre.
In addition to these regular events the Centre stages and/or hosts many “one-off” events such as regional fencing camp, various Northumberland Schools Cup Finals and a host of local league football and cricket teams.
