14th Annual University Boat Race, Sunday 9 May 2010
Venue: Newcastle Gateshead Quayside
Rowers from Newcastle University and Durham University Boat Clubs go head to head in their annual clash of oars over a 1.8 km course on the River Tyne in the 14th University Boat Race.
Set against a backdrop of Newcastle Gateshead's spectacular cityscape, this annual battle for supremacy between the North East's two premier rowing universities is now firmly established as one of region's most high-profile sporting events.
Land- and river-based entertainment begins at 12.00 noon, with the first of the rowing races getting under way at 1.00 pm. The programme includes a schools' eights race, and University eights races between the freshwomen, freshmen, senior women's and senior men's crews.
This year's event promises to be one of the most thrilling yet, as 2009 champions Newcastle University go all out to defend their title against their Durham University arch-rivals. Watch the spectacle unfold from Newcastle Quayside or Baltic Square as the racing eights surge towards the finish line under the Gateshead Millennium Bridge.
The University Boat Race is supported by Northumbrian Water, Port of Tyne, Gateshead Council, Newcastle City Council, Newcastle University, Durham University, ncjmedia, The Environment Agency, Volker Stevin, HMS Calliope and Cancer Research UK.
