3 Year Student membership

Q: What does my 3 year Sports Centre ‘Silver membership’ entitle me to?

A: It entitles you to:-

Use the University Sports Centre & book activities e.g. squash, badminton, football, basketball etc.

Take part in the Intra Mural/Campus Sport Programme (additional fees apply).

Take part in exercise classes (an additional fee of £2.00 per class).

Q: Can I upgrade my membership?

A: Yes. You can add on the following upgrade option to your basic 3 year ‘Silver membership’ for the following fees. Gold 1 year upgrade is valid until the 30 September 2016.

Gold Upgrade 1 year – £110.00

Benefits of this category are:
All benefits of Silver membership plus unlimited use of the Health & Fitness Suite, FREE entry to exercise classes (Gold Members who book a class and fail to show up or withdraw from a class without giving at least 3 hours notice of cancellation, will be charged a £3.00 no show fee or £2.00 late cancellation fee).

Members who book facility areas and fail to show up without giving at least 3 hours notice of cancellation, will be charged a £3.00 no show fee or £2.00 late cancellation fee).

PLEASE NOTE: In order to ensure safe and effective use of the equipment anyone taking out Gold membership will be required to complete an induction course. The online e-induction must be completed prior to using the Health & Fitness Suite. Alternatively by giving prior notice you can book a FREE induction (£6.00 charge is applicable if no prior notice of cancellation is given) with one of our qualified instructors by visiting the Sports Centre in person or by telephone.

Q: How do I upgrade my membership?

A: Once you have registered for your course and obtained your University SMART Card, you can upgrade from Silver to Gold via the online membership system using your Member ID and pin. An e-mail will be sent to advise you of your details. If you haven’t received this e-mail you can contact the Sports Centre by e-mail at sport@ncl.ac.uk and a member staff will e-mail you your details. Please have your payment method available as you will need to make payment at the time of upgrading.

Alternatively you can upgrade in person at the Sports Centre during centre opening hours.

Gold Upgrade 1 year – £110.00

1 year upgrade is valid until 30 September 2016.

Payment can be made by either cash, debit or credit card (including American Express).

Q: What are my payment options?

A: A ‘one-off’ payment request of £165.00 will be issued with your accommodation invoice. Alternatively if you have chosen to pay your accommodation charges by direct debit, payments will be split over each term 01 November 2015 = £65.00, 01 February 2016 = £50.00 and 01 May 2016 = £50.00. You will be issued an advanced payment notice prior to payment being taken. Please note, failed direct debits will incur an additional cost of £25.00.

Q: Can I cancel my membership?
A: Yes, Sports Centre members have 14 days to cancel their membership and if you cancel your membership prior to 19 October 2015, you will be granted a full refund of any fees you have paid. Partial refunds granted (£100) for years 2 and 3 when cancellation form completed and submitted after 19 October 2015, but prior to 18 January 2016. Please complete a Cancellation form.

Q: Can I defer my 3 year Silver Membership whilst I’m on a work placement out of the region for a year?

A: Yes, we will defer your membership for the year you are away from Newcastle University on a work placement relating to your degree course. We have a system in place that automatically picks up students that are on a placement away from the University. If this applies to you, we will send you a confirmation e-mail during your placement year to advise you that we have extended your Silver membership by one year to accommodate for this period of non usage of the Sports Centre membership.

Q: Q: What happens if I withdraw from the University?

A: We will refund you for any remaining full academic years of your membership. e.g. If you have paid £165.00 in the 2015/2016 academic year and withdrawn prior to September 2016 we would refund the remaining two years of the membership period which equates to £100.00. Proof of withdrawal is required by e-mail to admin.sport@ncl.ac.uk from a member of staff within your school of study.

Q: If I forget my SMART Card will I still be allowed entry?

A: You have the following options:-

Pay a £2.00 entry fee once your membership details are verified (non refundable).

Go and collect your SMART Card.

PLEASE NOTE: We will not verify your membership and then allow access free of charge as all members are required to carry their SMART Card. This is their means of access to other parts of the Centre.

Q: Do you have any exercise classes and if so do I need to take out membership to attend them?

A: Yes, to both questions! All year we run an exercise class programme which includes a wide range of classes for all tastes and abilities. To attend these classes you would need to have at least the Silver membership which costs £65.00 for both students and graduates. These classes can be booked at an additional fee of £2.00 but are FREE to Gold members.
Classes are bookable up to 14 days in advance.

To obtain your Login ID and Password which will allow you access to the online booking system you will need to e-mail sport@ncl.ac.uk with your full name and SMART Card number and a member of staff will e-mail you your details.

Q: How do I make a booking to use the courts, multi-purpose rooms, studio and outdoor pitches?

A: Indoor usage: In person at Sports Centre reception with your SMART Card, by telephone 0191 2087225 or via our online booking system (PLEASE NOTE: Volleyball, Multi Purpose Rooms, Studio and Special bookings are not available to book online). To obtain your Login ID and Password which will allow you access to the online booking system you will need to e-mail sport@ncl.ac.uk with your full name and SMART Card number and a member of staff will e-mail you your details.
