Newcastle University Boat Club (NUBC) broke all their previous records at the BUCS Regatta held at the National Water Sports Centre, Nottingham from 5-7 May 2012.
The men’s team laid a solid foundation on day one with wins for the intermediate eight which was quickly followed by a comfortable victory for the senior men in the championship eight to regain their BUCS crown. This completed a memorable double for the men’s team having won both the intermediate and championship eight at the BUCS head in February 2012. During the course of the regatta there was further success with gold in the championship coxless four (A crew) and championship coxless pair. Silver followed in the championship coxed four, intermediate coxless pair and the intermediate quad with bronze in the championship coxless four (B crew), lightweight pair and intermediate quadruple sculls.
Not to be outdone the women’s team put some outstanding races together to achieve four championship silver medals in the eight, coxed four, lightweight double and lightweight pair and three bronze medals in the championship coxless four and championship pair as well as the intermediate pair.
Special mention must go to the coaches and support team led by Angelo Savarino which included Jesse Burgoine, Michael Hughes, Johnny Elliott, Tom Jordan, James Faire and Nick Bartlett. NUBC were cheered on and supported by a large number of parents who witnessed the outstanding team spirit and togetherness of all members of NUBC during the regatta.
Once the water had settled NUBC had gained 17 BUCS medals, 156 BUCS points and achieved the most championship medals.
