BUCS – Round Up: Week 6

Week 6’s fixtures were blighted by the horrendous weather which swept across Northern England. Weather aside it was a good week for some of the Premiership clubs after disappointing starts to the season.

The lacrosse side had an excellent 10-9 win away from home against Manchester University which should avoid any talk of relegation. After the disappointment of last week the men’s rugby 1st team secured a moral boosting win. For the first time in six years they came away from Durham University with all three points, winning 13-10. This fine result leaves them on equal points with Northumbria University in the Premier Men’s North A league. The netball 1st team narrowly beat Leeds University 34-33 and lie 3rd in the Premier Women’s North league

Regrettably the men’s table tennis 1st team were soundly beaten 16-0 away at Warwick University with relegation now a reality. The women’s fencing team were beaten by a strong Manchester University side 111-130 leaving them also at the foot of the table.

The women’s hockey 1st team continued their excellent form beating Durham University 2nds 2-1 in a close fought game. They remain at the top of the table by five points and are without doubt pushing for promotion into the Premiership.

Once again the women’s squash 1st team were victorious, beating their stable mates from the 2nd team 4-0. They are now only two points behind Durham University in the Northern Conference Women’s 1A league. The men’s squash 1st team were awarded a walk over against Sheffield Hallam and they remain three points clear at the top of the table.

After a bright start to the season the women’s rugby 1st team lost again going down 34-5 to Leeds University. The men’s hockey 1st, 2nd and 3rd sides also lost. On a more positive note the men’s 1st and 2nd tennis sides were both triumphant, they now sit 1st and 3rd respectively in the Northern Conference Men’s 3B league. Women’s tennis 1st team revenged their defect to Leeds Met 2nds at the beginning of the season by coming away with an excellent 6-4 victory leaving them top of the Northern Conference 1A league.

Weather played a key role in the sporting calendar this week however the enforced break should ensure that the teams are even hungrier for victory when they compete in next week’s fixtures.
