On Thursday 4th March, the Newcastle sport development team successfully organised a Regional SUNEE Street League regional multi-sport event at Coach Lane.

Street League aims to transform the lives of disadvantaged adults, using sport to help build confidence, improve health and develop the participants’ employability. The day at Coach Lane introduced the clients to diverse sports that were new to many of them - tag rugby, rounders, badminton, boxercise and volleyball.

While all sports were well received, tag rugby was the clear favourite. “The clients really seemed to enjoy the rugby, a lot of enthusiasm and energy went into it!” said Sarah Todd, Sport Development Officer.

The warm atmosphere of the event was matched by the weather, with the clients enjoying the sun as they ate their complementary lunches. At the end of the day, five were presented with medals by the coaches for their admirable commitment to the sports.

In a remarkable act of selflessness that epitomises what the programme promotes, client James Briiant received a medal but then gave it to a fellow participant who he felt deserved it more than him.

“That was a fantastic gesture, and really great to see. It just shows the worthiness of this project. All in all, today was a huge success - great weather, great coaches and great volunteers too!” said Sarah.
