Newburn Water Sports Centre

The University has recently completed phase 1 of the redevelopment of the Newburn Water Sports Centre on the banks of the River Tyne. It was previously the host of only the University Boat Club re-development of the site will allow the Water Sports Centre to house other water based sports clubs, notably Canoe and Canoe Polo.

Phase 1 of the project has seen a total refurbishment of the changing and well-being facilities on the site, with the original building being stripped back to the brickwork.  Changing facilities have been increased in size and modernised, as has the upstairs social area which now boasts an excellent view across the River Tyne.

The initial phase of the project has also included the erection of a large storage facility which will allow the University Canoe and Canoe Polo Clubs to re-locate onto the site.  This storage facility will also allow the University Boat Club to increase their portfolio of equipment as it houses a significant increase in racking space.

The final part of Phase 1 was to completely renew the access road into the site, and re-surface the car parking and boat wash down areas. This has also made a significant difference to the appearance and accessibility of the site to the users.

The focus of the project is now on phase 2 which is due to be completed in the early part of this summer.  This will include a new roof on the existing storage facility, plus upgrade work to the existing racking and workshop areas in the same building.
