Npower come out on top again!

The annual Newcastle University Summer Business League sponsored by Watson Burton LLP proved to be yet another successful tournament for all involved.  A record 18 teams which were made up of local businesses in and around Newcastle City Centre entered this year’s tournament.  The fixtures were played in mixed weather conditions during the months of May, July and August at Longbenton Sports Ground and Cochrane Park.

During the group stages the teams in each division played each other once.  After this the top four teams in each division entered the Championship Knock out Stages and the bottom four teams in each division entered the Shield Knock out Stages.   Once the knock out stages commenced, the pressure on each team increases as defeat means elimination from the competition.  RICS North East and XMP who won their respective groups were favourites to reach the latter stages of the competition.

RICS North East and XMP cruised to the semi-finals but both teams were beaten and missed out on the final.  Spinnaka beat XMP in a very competitive semi-final and the defending champions Npower comprehensively beat RICS North East 6 – 0 in a very one sided semi final. Meanwhile in the Shield, British Airways and Nigel Wright Consultancy reached the final of this competition.

In the finals, which were played on Tuesday 18 August at Cochrane Park, British Airways beat Nigel Wright Consultancy 2-1 in what was a very competitive and physical game to claim the Shield and Npower overpowered Spinnaka 5 – 1 to win the Championship Final.

The victory capped off a great season for Npower who added the Summer League title to the Winter League title they won in March.  Npower also dominated the individual awards with Matty Bull winning Top Goalscorer, Adam Barlow voted Player of the Tournament and Scott Revell named Man of the Match in the Championship final.  In the Shield final Dan Jowett was named Man of the Match.

The overall standard of football has increased again this year which bodes well for the

Winter Business League which will commence in October. Eight teams will do battle throughout the winter months in what should be a very exciting and competitive league.
