On Saturday 1st December, a team of nine fencers from Great Britain travelled to the Young Lions FIE A grade World Cup hosted in Helsinki, Finland.
Amongst them was Newcastle University Elite Athlete Squad Member and starlet Sam Ridley, who hoped to continue his rich vein of form at this major event. The event involved in excess of 170 competitors from over 29 countries and his participation alone demonstrates the high level at which Ridley is reaching within his sport.
After an impressive display, Ridley finished in an unbelievable 10th place, beaten in the last sixteen by Italian fencer, Gabriele Cimini, a formidable opponent who clinched a bronze medal in the 2011 Under 17 world championships.
This result secures Ridley as the number one under 20 fencer in Great Britain and sees him comfortably achieve the selection criteria for the 2013 World Championships in Porec, Croatia.
On what is already a very successful calendar year for Newcastle, this result ratifies the improvement and investment into the sport of fencing at the university.
