Blustery conditions in the Tyne Valley didn’t spoil the enthusiasm of the teams who between them raised over £3000 to support the Sports Scholarship Fund at Newcastle University.
The 7th annual Sports Scholarship Golf Tournament was held on the Filly Course at Close House Golf Club near Heddon on the Wall. The course itself has just re-opened after extensive redevelopments and improvements, was in excellent condition and provided a stern test for all golfers.
Eighteen teams entered the competition, taking part in a sociable but competitive 4 ball Texas Scramble, providing plenty of friendly banter and competition between the teams as did the longest drive and closest to the pin competitions.
Prizes were on offer for the top three teams, as well as four ‘nearest the pin’ and 2 ‘longest drive’ competitions. Precor / Wilson who have been supplying Newcastle University with state of the art fitness equipment for over 15 years very kindly sponsored all the prizes for the event and the winning golfers took home some fantastic Wilson golf equipment.
The standard of golf from all teams was extremely high in the difficult conditions but overall victory went to Turner & Townsend who produced a fantastic team performance to record a net score of 59.2. They snatched victory on final hole count back from the 2 time champions CCS Mobile who had to settle for 2nd position on this occasion. Durham County Council finished in 3rd position also breaking 60 with a nett score of 59.8.
Newcastle University Sport would to thank all teams for supporting the tournament and hope you enjoyed the golf and hospitality at Close House.
