Magnificent FOUR in a Row for Team Newcastle

A truly magnificent performance by Team Newcastle ensured the Stan Calvert Memorial Trophy was retained for a 4th consecutive year with a 96.25 points to 60.75 victory against sporting rivals Northumbria University.

Never in the history of Stan Calvert has the trophy been won 4 years in a row and the winning margin of 35.5 points was an exceptional result.   Throughout the day points were hotly contested in 25 different sports and in 72 separate fixtures, including for the first time clay pigeon shooting, gymnastics and gaelic football.

By the time the main rugby union first teams took to the field for their showpiece match in front of 3,000 supporters at Gateshead International Stadium, Team Newcastle had already done enough to win overall.  This would still not affect the men’s 1st XV from dominating the rugby union match with a comfortable victory which made the night complete.  Exceptional results prior to the main event in the evening by American football, cricket, rugby union, squash, tennis, hockey and rowing ensured the outcome was always going to be a successful one.

Performance Sport Manager, Fraser Kennedy, said ‘It’s hard to sum up the magnitude of this victory. To win 4 years in a row is incredible and is testament to the organisation, commitment and dedication of the athletes and coaches’

Professor Charles Harvey, Pro-Vice Chancellor with responsibility for sport, congratulated Team Newcastle, saying: ‘What a fantastic achievement for our sportsmen and women.  We cannot over-estimate the importance of a strong reputation for sport when it comes to our desire to recruit high-calibre students, and our victory in the Calvert cup serves to reinforce Newcastle University’s fast growing reputation for sporting excellence.
