Each year up to 40 sports scholarships are awarded to students by the Centre for Physical Recreation & Sport. All sports scholarship applicants will be required to demonstrate previous and current sporting achievements and have a commitment to continue improving in their sport and representing the University. Selection criteria is based upon senior or age group representative honours at national and/or regional level. Individuals who are part of National Governing Body (NGB’s) performance squads will also be considered. Successful sports scholars will be expected to represent the University in their sport and be an ambassador for the University.
Recruitment Sports Scholarships will be offered across a range of sports on the Performance Sport Programme. They are aimed at recruiting high quality student athletes (Undergraduate and Postgraduate) who want to achieve sporting excellence and academic success whilst at Newcastle University. The Recruitment Sports Scholarships are awarded at 3 levels and will only be awarded to athletes who gain either an unconditional offer or a conditional offer from the University and are going into their first year of study at Newcastle.
Applications will be considered until June of the year applicants are planning on studying (i.e. June 2013 for September 2013 Academic Entry)
Performance Sports Scholarships are aimed at performance athletes who are already studying at the University (Undergraduate and Postgraduate). These scholarships, worth up to £1000, can only be applied for once the athlete has taken up their place at Newcastle University.
All sports scholars will receive preferential support through strength and conditioning coaching, sports science and support service provison and upgrade to Gold Membership for the sports centre.
