Project ODyssey

University staff have a number of career development interventions available to them, however, the provision is a collection of separate programmes or initiatives working in parallel with no overarching strategy or clear signposting.

Commitments to career development activities are embedded within each of the PSS and faculty Strategic Plans. The ODyssey Project aims to make career development interventions more easily available to all staff and offer a range of clear and accessible pathways which empower the individual to a make informed career choices.

ODyssey Overview

Odyssey; (noun) long and eventful or adventurous journey or experience

Mentoring – NU Mentoring, a University-wide mentoring scheme open to all members of staff.

Job Swap – Offers staff on the same grade the opportunity to temporarily swap positions. Open to all members of professional support staff across all units and services.

Job Shadowing – Offers staff the opportunity to become familiar with a different job by working alongside and observing the work of another employee. Open to all members of professional support staff across all units and services.

Career Talks – Development of a network of specially trained mentors to have one-off career discussions. This is currently a concept and we will be asking staff for their views to help us develop this idea further.

Professions Portal – An on-line tool where staff can explore various professional pathways available within the University.  This is currently a concept and we will be asking staff for their views to help us develop this idea further before work commences in July 2017.
