ITLHE Part A

Part A of the ITLHE is suitable for registered postgraduate students and some staff who teach and who do not have an equivalent qualification. If you are in this category and are going to teach in this academic year then you must complete Part A at minimum.

There are two versions of Part A and you should take the version of the module that is most appropriate for the type of teaching that you do now, or are expecting to do in the near future.

  1. For those who expect to teach mainly through discussion-based activities including seminars;
  2. For those teaching through practical-based activities including demonstrating and fieldwork.

Once completed, either version of Part A will make you eligible to teach at Newcastle University even if the nature of this teaching should change in the future.

After completing the two-day workshop you will:

  • be able to facilitate seminar discussions or demonstrating sessions;
  • understand issues in student assessment;
  • be aware of the research basis for the techniques in which you have been trained;
  • better understand your role in respect of pastoral and other duties, quality assurance and enhancement, and of appropriate professional behaviour;
  • be able to use reflective process to evaluate and develop your teaching.

You will receive a certificate of attendance on completion of the two-day workshop.

How to apply

To register your interest in attending an Introduction to Teaching and Learning Part A course, you need to contact your School Administrator (or the person in your School who allocates teaching/demonstrating responsibilities).  Once the School has approved your application, the Staff Development Unit will contact you to confirm details.

Please note that a prioritisation system is used by your School and the Staff Development Unit to allocate training to those with current or imminent teaching responsibilities.
