Transitions Programme

The Transitions Programme is aimed at research staff considering a move out of academic research and exploring what else would interest them.

If you have considered roles in administration or management positions within academia, taking your career into the private or not-for-profit sector, or wondered whether you might suit a complete change of direction, this programme will be of interest to you.

The thought of even considering leaving an academic research career path can be daunting and overwhelming. You may have asked yourself questions such as:

  • What are my skills, strengths, values and motivators?
  • What do I want out of my career and what is important to me?
  • How do I identify career options open to me?
  • How can I find out what employers are looking for?
  • Which skills and knowledge are transferable to a different work setting?
  • What's the best way to find a new job?

The Transitions Programme will support you to answer such questions and more. It will help you develop effective job search strategies tailored to your very own personal circumstances.

Structure

Approximately 8 participants will work together for four, two hour meetings over a 2 month period.

Required Commitment

You are encouraged to put aside at least 3 hours per week, for the fortnightly meetings and working on the career management and job search techniques introduced during the meetings. Depending on your individual circumstances, career options and labour market situation, you may need to find additional time for job search activities as you would during any other job search process.
