Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is Maths-Aid?

Maths-Aid is a free and confidential service whose purpose is to provide assistance to students from any discipline on their numerical and mathematical skills in a friendly and supportive environment.

Why has it been set up?

Maths-Aid was created to further the support network available to Newcastle University Students. The Union Society, Careers Service and Disability Support Service all have major interests in supporting students in numerate skills, and Maths-Aid exists to provide that support.

Who do you help?

We encourage students from any discipline to drop in and use our service. Priority is given to first years, and we ask that Postgraduate students make an appointment, but we endeavour to help everyone who needs it.

What can Maths-Aid do for me?

Our team of highly experienced tutors will be able to offer you help and advice on a vast array of mathematical and statistical problems. We can help you to understand difficult topics and point you in the right direction, enabling you to make the most of your everyday academic work.

Who staffs Maths-Aid?

Maths-Aid is staffed by a small team of permanent coordinators and a vibrant team of tutors. Our tutors are all vastly experienced in maths and stats, and the team consists of staff and PhD/Masters students from the School of Mathematics and Statistics as well as PhD/Masters students from various schools of engineering.

What happens in Maths-Aid?

Maths-Aid is a drop-in centre, which means that no appointment is necessary – you simply turn up and speak to a tutor. While you are in Maths-Aid, you will sit one-to-one with a tutor, who will talk through your queries as well as offering help and explanations. Our tutors will frequently make notes, which they will then give to you to supplement your own, and may give booklets or advice for further study.
