At the start of my second year I began my own radio show on NSR. I co-host a show called Take a Break, Have a Kit Kat, which is both really enjoyable and very rewarding. Radio production has always really intrigued me. It appealed to me as it always seemed a fun way to express your creativity without having to rely on images or written words.
I am involved in all aspects of media opportunities provided by the Union. I am a regular columnist for the Life and Style section of The Courier and presenter of regular show Take a break, Have a Kit Kat, on NSR.
I really enjoy being part of the team which write, produce and host both the radio shows and editions of The Courier. I love working alongside my co-host on Take a Break, Have a Kit Kat. Researching, planning and selecting the songs to play on the shows has become second nature to us since we started working together. As a team we have so much fun and socialise together on a regular basis.
Seeing my name in print never fails to make me happy as does students approaching me to complement or comment on my show or article. Getting the chance to voice your ideas and opinions to an audience is really liberating and being able to discuss and debate issues that matter live on air is even more thrilling.
Good time management really helps. I have learnt never to bite off more than I can chew, especially if I have a lot on that week for my course. I have to prioritise and remember that at the end of the day I am at University to gain a degree.
I am looking to peruse a career in either print or broadcast journalism so being involved with The Courier and NSR has been invaluable in training me for working in the world of professional media production. I have developed a multitude of essential skills which will help me on my way to achieving that perfect job in the future. I have learnt how to work to a strict deadline, edit my own work, write with a specific audience in mind, and improved my communication and writing skills. I have developed essential DJ skills which will be necessary traits for the world of radio production.
