Why I got involved?

I wanted to get a part-time job that, as well as fitting around my studies and other commitments, allowed me to give something back to the University that has given me so many opportunities.

Main roles and responsibilities

Phoning Newcastle alumni in order to help them keep in touch with the University, as well as updating our records of where they are and what they’re doing now. We offer them the opportunity to give a gift to help support current students and University development.

Most enjoyable aspect

Having interesting and enjoyable conversations with alumni who appreciate and support what we are doing as student callers.  If they agree to give a gift then that’s a bonus!

Most rewarding aspect

Seeing the difference the Annual Fund makes to students and the University in general and knowing that we are a direct part of that difference.

Fitting it around my degree:

Doing a three hour shift twice a week is really easy to fit around my degree.  We call at a time when I probably wouldn’t be doing much anyway, and if anything, talking to alumni from similar subject areas inspires me to try and work harder and achieve more.

How I’ve benefitted:

I’ve developed a better understanding of how University funding works and what a difference charitable donations make.  I have also had several really beneficial and interesting conversations with alumni, which have given me ideas and inspiration for the future.
