Student Communications Team (SCT)

Annaliese Wimbleton

Annaliese Wimbleton, 2nd year Business Management

Why I got involved

Like most students I was never really fully aware of the variety of opportunities that the Career Service offered until they moved into a brand new building at the start of this new academic year. I applied to become a member of the Student Communications Team in order to start enhancing my graduate skills in preparation for when I graduate.

Main roles and activities

Our job is to promote the wide range of opportunities available to students via the Careers Service, to receive and collect feedback and to suggest possible improvements to the service to make it more accessible and exciting to students.

Most enjoyable aspect

I love working with the Careers Service. It’s really nice to see familiar faces, to know that there is a large team of people ready to help you with any problems you may have. Working alongside professionals and fellow students who have a wealth of knowledge and a variety of expertise makes every day a brand new experience. I really have learnt so much, and made a large group of good friends along the way.

Most rewarding aspect

The most rewarding part of working with the Careers Service has to be knowing that you are gaining invaluable life skills along the way. I am enhancing my own employability at the same time as helping others gain invaluable opportunities, opening doors to new employment opportunities and enhancing their graduate skills. Helping others is so rewarding, it really gives you a sense of achievement that I don’t think any other average part-time student job would ever give me.

Fitting it around my degree

Surprisingly easily. I always make sure that my degree comes first, and the team are very supportive and understand. The job is not like the average mundane part-time job, it does not take physical effort to turn up; it’s too enjoyable for that.

How I've benefited

My own CV is now more complete with a large range of skills tailored towards any opportunity that may now come my way. My communication, commercial awareness, patience, organisational and teamwork skills have been invaluably enhanced during the time I have worked on the SCT. These skills and experiences should help me to stand out from the other graduates entering the job market every year, and put me to the top of the applicant list.
