Non-University Awards and Competitions

  • ‘Undergraduate of the Year’ Awards - there are 12 award categories in this national competition, each sponsored by major graduate recruiter. Categories include Arts & Humanities, Law, Finance, Business, Engineering, Construction Engineering and Design, IT/Computer Science, Economics, Accountancy, Management, Social Sciences, plus two special awards for First Year of the Year and Low Carbon Undergraduate of the Year.
  • CIMA Global Business Challenge - international business competition offering a real-life taster of what it's like to be a chartered management accountant and the opportunity to showcase your skills in front of top graduate recruiters. Entries are welcomed from teams of four full-time undergraduates with an interest in business and finance. Launches in December each year.
  • Cyber Security Challenge - runs national online competitions throughout the year to raise awareness of cyber learning opportunities and careers. Prizes include internships with sponsor companies, training bursaries and conference places.
  • Guardian Student Media Awards - a great opportunity to boost your media career. Categories are: Publication, Website, Reporter, Feature Writer, Columnist, Critic, Photographer, Digital Journalist and Broadcast Journalist of the Year. Launches in March each year. Prizes are work experience opportunities with the Guardian and NME.
  • Guardian International Development Journalism Competition - for professional and amateur journalists (including students). Articles should centre around an aspect of global poverty that deserves more media exposure than it currently receives. 16 finalists will be flown out to Africa or Asia to research a new assignment which will be published in a special Guardian supplement.
  • IBM Universities Business Challenge - offers undergraduates the opportunity to improve their knowledge of the business world, put theory into practice and develop team-working, leadership and employability skills. Students work in teams as management consultants in a series of realistic, simulated companies, making all the critical business decisions that affect the company's performance. First prize is £1000.

  • npower Future Leaders - challenges teams of four students to conceive, develop and deliver a project which will positively impact on sustainability within their local community. Following last year’s competition, a team of four winners embarked upon a once in a lifetime trip to the Antarctic to assist with projects run by the 2041 organisation.
  • RWE npower Energy Challenge - annual inter-university competition to find the brightest minds in engineering, science and business. Working in teams of four, and with the help of a supporting lecturer, you will offer a solution to the current challenges faced by energy companies. Launches in November each year.
  • Frontrunner Awards - recognise students from China and the UK who strengthen the bonds between the East and West by initiating positive change, learning from each other, collaborating and thinking differently. There are five awards available. Students can either nominate themselves or get nominated by others. Shortlisted nominees may get the chance to undertake work experience with award sponsors (at the sponsor's discretion).
