Student Progress Visa Information for University staff

Staff and student discussionVisa information for students is available on the Visa Team pages. Students are advised to contact the Visa Team if they need to renew their visa or if there is a significant change in their circumstances.

Immigration advice in the UK is regulated by the Office of Immigration Services Commissioners (OISC). University's are exempt from OISC registration on condition that only named advisers give immigration advice within their competency level. The student immigration advisers at Newcastle University are based in the King’s Gate and available by email at visa@ncl.ac.uk or on extension 7133. No other members of staff at Newcastle University are permitted to advise students on student immigration issues. The Visa Team can assist staff with queries staff may have on student visas and the University’s responsibilities as a Tier 4 licence holder.

Tier 4 licence holders responsibilities

There is a postcard and web page summarising the key points that staff need to be aware of in relation to international students. It is critical that the University retains it's Tier 4 licence and all staff need to be aware of the licence requirements. Key requirements include:

  • Effective attendance monitoring systems
  • Reporting no-shows, unauthorised absences and withdrawals to UKBA
  • Reporting breaches of student visa conditions to UKBA (such as exceeding part-time work restrictions)
  • Ensuring that the Tier 4 license holder maintains updated copies of student visas and passports
