Access to Information

There are a number of ways that tutors can access information about students.

  • the PDP / ePortfolio system
  • the NUContact system enables staff to easily e-mail groups of students – and is based upon a brief student profile and student lists in an easily accessible format.
  • the staff portal includes many reports which list students by programme, module, stage and various other status indicators. Statistical reports are also available.

If you see any data errors on these systems you should report it to the School Office who will be able to amend the corporate database, which is used to update all of the above systems.

If you don’t have access to one of these systems, contact the ISS helpdesk.

Data Protection

Tutors are reminded of the need to observe the requirements of the 1998 Data Protection Act and should note that manual records are covered by the 1998 Act as well as computerised records (including e-mails). Fuller information can be gained from the University’s Data Protection Staff Handbook, which tutors are advised to read.

Freedom of Information

Tutors are also reminded of the need to observe the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000. The Act gives to the public a general right of access to all types of recorded information held by public authorities and the University is required to respond to individual requests for information.

Information requests must be in writing and contain details both of the applicant and the information sought. Fuller information can be gained from the University’s Freedom of Information website which tutors are advised to read.
