Students have the right to have drawn to the attention of boards of examiners any matter, such as medical or personal problems, which may have affected their examination performance. The relevant Examination Convention states that such notification should be in writing and should be considered by a Personal Extenuating Circumstance (PEC) committee, who will make adjustments and/ or recommendations to the board of examiners.
In many cases, tutors will be the first point of contact for students with such problems and they must ensure that the relevant PEC committee is informed as soon as possible. This is normally done by the student, but the tutor can also report the matter – or provide the student with a statement of support.
Normally, the student will be recommended to complete a PEC form to report their personal circumstances affecting performance in assessment / examination - www.ncl.ac.uk/students/progress/student-resources/help/. It is understood that some matters should be handled in confidence, but it is important that the student is encouraged to make a written submission to the PEC committee, even if the details of personal circumstances are brief.
Senate has approved a policy for the allocation of extra time or other special facilities for students with disabilities, whether permanent or temporary. The policy and other guidance can be accessed on the web at www.ncl.ac.uk/students/wellbeing/disability-support/
If you feel that the student may need support in managing the issues that affect them, the Student Wellbeing Service is available. www.ncl.ac.uk/students/wellbeing
