Transfer

Applying to Transfer from One Type of Candidature to Another

You should complete this application if:

  • You are currently registered as a full-time, part-time or combined student and, for financial or personal reasons, you wish to transfer to full-time or part-time candidature.

Please note that any students already registered as part-time or full-time students cannot transfer to combined candidature. This option is only available to postgraduate applicants.

Not all degree programmes, specifically those with a taught component such as the Integrated PhD or Doctorate in Education, can accommodate an alternative candidature. You should discuss the available options with your supervisor or Degree Programme Director before submitting your application.

Your application will be considered only if:

  • You have clearly indicated which type of candidature you are transferring to (either full-time or part-time).
  • You have provided a summary of the reasons for your request (and included any evidence you feel is appropriate).
  • Your supervisor(s) have confirmed their support of your application.
  • Your Head of School/Institute or Nominee has confirmed their support of your application.

You should note:

  • If you are currently in the UK as the holder of a visa (in any category) transferring from full-time to part-time studies could have implications relating to your immigration status. You are advised to attend one of the Visa Drop-In sessions before you submit your application, where staff will be happy to discuss your situation.
  • The Tuition Fees Team will recalculate your tuition fees based on your revised candidature, and it may be necessary for you to pay any difference in fees resulting from your transfer.
  • Unless you clearly state otherwise, and have the agreement of your School and Supervisory Team, the RSST or MSGS will transfer your candidature from the date your application is approved. We will calculate the length of time you have remaining on your new candidature, and your revised thesis submission deadline, based on the date of the transfer. For example:

A student who was initially registered full-time for a period of 18 months will be deemed to have completed the equivalent of 36 months of part-time study at the time of their transfer, and must therefore complete a further 36 months of part-time study to fulfil the minimum period of candidature for part-time study (72 months).

A student who was initially registered part-time for a period of 10 months will be deemed to have completed the equivalent of 5 months of full-time student at the time of their transfer, and must therefore complete a further 29 months of full-time study to fulfil the minimum period of candidature for full-time study (36 months).
