The University has a sharing agreement with the local Police and receives regular reports of student arrests for a variety of offences, including for example:
• Urinating in Public
• Drunk and Disorderly Conduct
• Breach of the Peace
• Assault
• Possession of an Illegal Substance
• Theft
• Criminal Damage / Vandalism
• Anti-Social Behaviour
• Sexual Assault
• Other Criminal Conviction
Upon receipt of such a report, the University will take appropriate action in accordance with the Student Disciplinary Procedures. From past experience, we have found that most of the students arrested have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. You should ensure you know your limits and remain in control of your actions at all times. Being under the influence of alcohol is not accepted as a form of defence against disciplinary action. See the guidance on Alcohol Awareness and Disciplinary Action.
I also wish to make you aware that the University is very concerned about the number of reports of students found to be using or in possession of an illegal substance. Please see the guidance available on Drugs Awareness and Disciplinary Action.
There is a variety of outcomes of Police action for possession of an illegal substance but please note that even a low level outcome such as a 'Cannabis Caution' may show on a CRB check and could therefore affect your future employment.
The University has an Owned and Managed Accommodation Illegal Drugs (Zero Tolerance) Policy and unfortunately a number of students have breached this resulting in exclusion from their accommodation. Please also see the other information available regarding discipline at the University. You may be particularly interested in reading the How Misconduct is Dealt with, Disciplinary Case Studies and Sanctions pages.
The University may also receive a report about students who have been hospitalised as the victim of a criminal act or as a result of a criminal act themselves. The main focus in these circumstances would be for the University to offer support to the student and their family via the Student Wellbeing Service or another member of staff, if relevant. I must also point out however, that an investigation in accordance with the Student Disciplinary Procedures may also be conducted once the student is well enough to engage.
