How Misconduct is Dealt With
Misconduct by students in the community will not be tolerated by the University. It will be dealt with in the following ways.
-
Local authorities
-
The City Council operates a Night Watch Team every night. They can issue on the spot fines for disturbances.
- If you are arrested for misconduct, the University will be informed. Most complaints about noise and behaviour are made about people making their way home from a night out.
- The Anti-Social Behaviour and Enforcement Team can issue Acceptable Behaviour Agreements (ABAs) to individual students or students collectively on joint housing agreements when persistent complaints of anti-social behaviour in the community are received.
- The BBC's Inside Out produced a special programme on Newcastle's Night Noise Team, which highlights noise issues in the community and how noise is dealt with.
-
The University
- Complaints to the University are treated very seriously and will be fully investigated.
- Students will be issued with sanctions by Student Progress Service for behaviour which brings the University's reputation into disrepute.
- The University will refer serious misconduct cases to a Student Disciplinary Committee.
- The Committees for Disciplinary Hearings will impose appropriate sanctions when misconduct has occurred and have the power to suspend and expel students from the University for gross misconduct.
