Student Sickness Procedure

Where illness prevents students from studying for more than three working days, they should complete a Self-Certification of Sickness (Word doc: 31KB) form and return the completed form to their tutor as soon as they are able to return to their studies. If a PEC application results from the illness, it would be necessary to include a medical certificate from the doctor as cases are considered on supporting evidence.

If illness prevents students from studying for more than seven working days, they should obtain a medical certificate from their doctor and forward it to their tutor as soon as possible.

On receipt of Self-Certification forms or medical certificates from doctors, tutors should ensure that any necessary applications are made to the appropriate body (eg PEC Committee, deans of postgraduate studies).   Tutors who are unsure which body is appropriate in any particular case should seek advice from the Student Progress Service or graduate school.  Applications should include as evidence the Self-Certification form or medical certificate and at least one other supporting document such as a letter from the tutor.

If a student is reluctant for full details of an illness to be made known, even to a tutor, owing to its sensitive nature, the student may provide via the tutor a confidential letter in a sealed envelope for the Chairman of the PEC Committee or Board of Examiners, as appropriate, for the Chairman’s eyes only.

Tutors should also consider whether the effects of a student illness are such that external bodies such as sponsors or local education authorities may need to be informed.  Advice on individual cases may be obtained from Student Progress or graduate school.
