Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS)

What is a CAS?

A Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS) is an electronic document produced by the University as confirmation that we are prepared to sponsor your stay in the UK for study purposes. A CAS is produced using the Home Office’s sponsor management system.

You will need a new valid CAS if you renew your Tier 4 visa.

How do I get a CAS?

If you are a prospective student your CAS will be sent to you automatically by e-mail from the relevant admissions department after your offer has been made unconditional. This may take several weeks during the summer when Admissions departments are very busy.

If you need to renew your visa to continue on your current course of study you need to request your CAS by completing our online CAS Request form. Instructions to submit your supporting documents are also included on the CAS request form. Please note your CAS request will not be considered until your supporting documents are received.

We require you to submit your CAS request form at least 10 weeks before your current visa expires. If you intend to renew your visa in the UK you must first attend a visa workshop. A CAS will only be issued if you have attended a visa workshop within the preceding 3 months.

Please be aware that if the CAS will be issued within 28 days or less of the expiry date of your current visa, the Visa Team reserves the right to request for valid financial evidence that meets the Tier 4 requirements (for yourself and all dependants) before issuing the CAS.

When will I receive my CAS?

If you have submitted a CAS request the CAS is normally issued within 10 working days from when the Visa Team receives it. Please note if you are a postgraduate research student your CAS request will be processed by the relevant research student support team in the first instance. This means that there may be some delay before you receive your CAS.

You must provide all the relevant documents listed on the CAS request form in order for your request to be processed. If your course requires ATAS clearance your CAS will only be issued if you have received fresh ATAS approval, click here for further details on how to apply for ATAS.

Your CAS will be sent to you by email. If you are a registered or continuing student we will always send it to your Newcastle University email. Please check your CAS carefully for inaccuracies and report any mistakes immediately to the member of staff who issued it.

If you require a second CAS as a result of a visa refusal or you allow your first CAS to expire, a fee is payable for a replacement.

Conditions under which the University will issue/decline a CAS request

Submitting a CAS request form is not a guarantee that the University will issue a CAS for you. There are circumstances under which a CAS request might be declined. If you are renewing your visa in the UK you should ensure that you request your CAS at least 10 weeks before your current visa expires.

Students should note that the University is licenced by the Home Office to act as a sponsor for visa purposes for students admitted to relevant programmes of study at the University. As a licenced Sponsor, the University has specified duties to the Home Office.
