Police Registration

Students from some countries who have a visa for more than 6 months are required to register with the police. Students in Newcastle should register with Northumbria Police.

Students at Newcastle University London should register with the Metropolitan Police. Please follow the Metropolitan Police guidance for more information.

If you are required to register you must do so at the earliest opportunity.

After you have registered you must inform the police of any changes to your circumstances during your stay in the UK such as:

  • Change of UK address
  • New visa
  • New passport or change of details in passport
  • Change of Tier 4 sponsor
  • Change of course
  • Marriage
  • Birth of a child

There are very severe penalties for students who fail to register or who fail to keep their police certificate up-to-date by reporting changes of circumstances.

If the requirement is stated on your decision letter you should also include a copy of this letter with the form, and you must take the letter with you to your police appointment. Please ensure you upload a copy of your entry visa and front of BRP card with the police registration form. You may need to re-size the image of your visa / letter before you send it so it is not too big.

You will be allocated an appointment which you must attend on time and take with you:

  • Passport
  • Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) if applicable
  • Decision letter, if applicable
  • Certificate of attendance / CAS letter
  • £34 in cash
  • Passport photographs
  • Receipt for tuition fees (you should request this at least 48 hours before your police appointment) / Sponsor letter if applicable
  • Tenancy agreement / bank statement / utility bill to confirm address. Please make sure you enter the same address on the Policeregistration form.

Updating your certificate

If you have previously registered with Northumbria Police

You should ensure that your police registration certificate is up-to-date at all times and inform the police if there are any changes to your circumstances.

You should contact the police at ovro@northumbria.pnn.police.uk within 7 days of any changes and include your FULL name AND Police Registration Certificate number and also the reason why you need an appointment in your email.

You will normally be allocated an appointment to get your certificate updated. The police will tell you if you need to take any specific documents with you to your appointment. If you do not keep your certificate up-to-date you may be penalised by the police, and it may cause problems if you need to renew your visa.

Leaving the UK

If you are going to leave the UK during your course of study for a period of 1 month or more you should hand back your police registration certificate directly to the OVRO Office based at the Newcastle City Centre Police Station on Forth Banks; you can collect it from the police when you return to the UK.

Please also be aware that after you have completed your course and are returning home you should hand back your police registration certificate directly to the OVRO Office based at Newcastle City Centre Police Station on Forth Banks before returning to your home country.
