Letters of Support

Where appropriate, we can provide letters in support of mitigating circumstances:

These are provided when we are confident that the problems the student has experienced have seriously affected their ability to concentrate effectively on their academic studies.

Letters are not usually provided retrospectively. It is expected that the student has been in contact with the service close to the time when they need to establish that their academic performance was affected.

The provision of a letter cannot be the sole reason for contact with the service.

Letters are provided only at the students request and are not sent without the student having seen them and given their written permission.

Any team member can refuse to provide a letter if they thinks it is inappropriate to do so.

Letters confirming attendance are not provided to a third party, without the student’s permission. This is for reasons of confidentiality and because attendance is not necessarily proof of mitigating circumstances.

Letters are not provided confirming fitness to study (or to practice for vocational courses of study).

The letter provided will give the time period that the student attended. It will provide relevant, but not detailed, information about the student’s circumstances.
