I joined JUNAC (Joint Universities Northern Assessment Centre) in 2005 to provide assessments for students who are eligible for Disabled Students’ Allowances. The Newcastle and Durham offices separated in December 2010 and I now work solely for the University Centre for Assessments in Newcastle (UCAN)
My role involves working with both prospective and current students and covers all disabilities/medical conditions, including dyslexia and sensory impairment. Students can come to the assessment centre from anywhere in the country, but tend to either live or intend to study in the locality.
Following the assessment I provide written recommendations for support and solutions to ensure student needs are met on their particular course. This involves contacting suppliers, Disability Advisers and Funding Authorities such as SFE, NHS or Research Councils.
