University Centre for Assessments at Newcastle

The University Centre for Assessments at Newcastle (UCAN) is based at Newcastle University and is accredited by the Disabled Students Allowance Quality Assurance Group (DSA-QAG). It was set up to meet the assessment needs of disabled students across the region, to enable them to access Disabled Students Allowances (DSAs).

We can provide a professional assessment service to students with:

  • hearing impairment
  • visual impairment
  • autistic spectrum disorder
  • medical Conditions
  • mental health problems
  • mobility difficulties
  • specific learning difficulties ie dyslexia

We aim to:

  • respond to enquires immediately
  • send out appointments within 1 working day of contact
  • complete and submit needs assessment reports to the student within 10 working days of the assessment
  • arrange home visits if necessary
  • submit reports to the Funding body and HEI within 1 day of receiving the student’s agreement
  • employ assessors with appropriate experience and qualifications and ensure they undertake regular and appropriate training
