National Minimum Wage

The National Minimum Wage (NMW) is a minimum amount per hour which most workers in the UK are entitled to be paid. With a few exceptions, it applies to all workers over the compulsory school leaving age. The rate is reviewed every year with any changes taking place in October.


From 1st October 2016 the NMW rates are:

  • adults 25 and over, receive a rate of £7.50 an hour
  • adults 21 to 24, receive a rate of £7.05 an hour
  • workers aged 18 to 20 inclusive receive a rate of £5.60 an hour
  • young people aged under 18 receive £4.05 an hour
  • apprentices receive £3.50 an hour
