2012/13 National Scholarship
Non-UK EU undergraduate students paying £9,000 fees whose household income is at or below £25,000* are eligible to be considered for one of the 455 National Scholarships available.
*Due to the limited number of awards available it may not be possible to award a scholarship to all students who have a household income figure of £25,000 or less. Priority will be given to those students who have the lowest household income. While precise figures will not be known until after registration in September 2012, at this stage it is predicted that we will only have sufficient scholarships available to make awards to students whose household income is £16,000 or less.
Students on a placement year will receive a £8,000 tuition fee discount so therefore cannot be considered for a National Scholarship. MEng Chemical Engineering, MComp Computer Science and MChem Chemistry courses are the exception to this rule and will be considered for a pro rata National Scholarship based on their tuition fee liability.
UK government guidelines mean the following groups of students cannot be considered for a National Scholarship:
- Students domiciled in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales
- Students whose tuition fees are funded or part-funded by the NHS on any year of their course (Speech and Language Sciences, Dental Hygiene & Therapy Diploma, Dental Surgery, Medicine and Surgery, Accelerated Medicine and Surgery)
- Students funded by the Teaching Agency (e.g. PGCE students)
- Students directly continuing from one course to another (e.g. foundation degree or HND onto the final year of an honours degree
- Students transferring in from another Higher Education Institution
- Any other students whose fees are paid or part-paid through a sponsorship arrangement
Students can only receive one of our main scholarship schemes. Students will automatically be considered for our Access and National Scholarships.

Applications
A separate application form does not need to be made in order to apply for a National Scholarship. If you want to be considered for a National Scholarship you must complete and return an application for income assessed support to the Student Finance EU Team
You can only be awarded a National Scholarship if you have applied for income assessed funding. There are no exceptions. Your assessment authority will carry out the income assessment and pass on information to the Student Loans Company (SLC) to match against the University’s National Scholarship rules. If you want to be automatically considered for a National Scholarship you (and your parents/sponsors) must consent to share your household income information with the University on your student finance application form. If this is not done your data cannot be supplied to the University and you cannot be assessed for a National Scholarship.
Non-UK EU students awarded National Scholarships will be sent award letters directly by Newcastle University Student Financial Support Team staff to their University email addresses.
Please contact us if you meet all the eligibility criteria and have not received an award letter by December 2012.
Appeals
If you think the decision we have made not to award you a National Scholarship is incorrect you can ask that we review our original decision and you have the right to appeal. However, you should only consider submitting an appeal once you have considered carefully the information in the attached guide (PDF: 81KB).
