Funding for PGCE Students

Training Bursary

The Teaching Agency offer a tax free bursary to assist eligible UK and EU students undertaking a PCGE. The amount of bursary available will depend on teaching subject and UK degree (or equivalent) class.  These bursaries are usually paid directly to the student on a monthly basis during the course.

* Art and design, design and technology, economics, engineering, English, dance, drama, geography, history, information and communications technology (ICT), computer science, classics, music, biology, physical education, primary, and religious education mainstream post-graduate ITT courses attract £9,000 bursaries for trainees with a first and £5,000 for trainees with a 2:1
** General science, business studies, citizenship, applied science, health and social care, leisure and tourism, media studies, psychology, social sciences (except economics)ITT courses attract no bursary.

Tuition Fees

Tuition fees for UK students undertaking a PGCE in 2012/13 will be £9,000.  Home UK students will be able to apply for a tuition fee loan to cover the cost of their fees. 

Student Maintenance Loan

UK home students undertaking a PGCE will be eligible to apply for a maintenance loan to help them cover their living costs.  All eligible students from England can receive 65% of the maximum maintenance loan available - this is the non-income assessed element. The remaining 35% is income - assessed and the amount a student will receive will depend upon their household income.

Student Maintenance Grant

Students who choose to make an income-assessed application for a student maintenance loan may also be eligible to receive a maintenance grant.  This grant in non-repayable and the level of grant payable will depend upon household income.  The maximum grant available for 2012/13 for students from England is £3,250.  Those students who have a household income of less than £25,000 will receive the maximum grant.  Partial grants are payable to students who have household income of between £25,000 and £42,600

Extra Help

Grants are also available for students with childcare and caring responsibilities or if a student incurs extra costs as a direct result of a disability or specific learning difficulty.

Students from Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales who want to apply for a maintenance loan, tuition fee loan and grants should apply to their own assessment authority.
