Counselling

Regardless of age or nationality, coming to University can be challenging both socially and emotionally. Counselling can provide a confidential, safe place in which to explore whatever is causing you concern.

It can help with a wide variety of problems whether straightforward or complex, current or from the past. Exploring the issues with a counsellor can enable you to gain a greater understanding of yourself and your situation.

Counselling is a positive step towards looking after your emotional wellbeing so that you can engage more fully with student life. It is free to all registered students.

Confidentiality

Counsellors are bound by BACP Code of Practice and the Confidentiality Policy (PDF: 109KB) of Student Wellbeing.

All information students provide is strictly confidential except in exceptional circumstances. Confidential information can be shared and used to support students in difficulties with the explicit informed consent of the student.

Confidentiality can be broken when students have attempted to seriously harm self or others or have spoken to others of an intention to do so. Every effort is made to encourage students to seek further help and support themselves, if these circumstances arise, so the counsellors can continue to work with the student.

Confidentiality may also be broken in relation to child protection issues and terrorism.
