Colour palette

The logo should be used as a three colour logo wherever practicable, and can only be used in the following colours or as a mono logo in black against white:

  • Three colours:
    Pantone 541 (blue)
    Pantone 186 (red)
    Pantone 356 (green)

Backgrounds

The logo should not be used on patterned or dark backgrounds, but where this has to be the case (photographic images etc), care must be taken to ensure that minimum spacing is assured and that the logo is not distorted or obscured by the image.

Orientation

The logo should never appear at any other angle than horizontal and must never appear within a heading or sentence.

Content of logo

The logo is comprised of a graphic element and the words ‘Newcastle Institute for Research on Sustainability’. These elements together form the logo: no element of the logo may be used in isolation without the express prior consent of the Institute’s Marketing Team.

Description

The logo is a bold and confident shape, intended to give the impression of a cutting-edge Institute with overlapping and interlinked areas of research. The logo is purposely free from any surrounding box or border, and it is important that the logo is given space to ‘visually breathe’.

Usage

The logo must not be used on any materials, printed or electronic, without approval from the Institute (see below).

In all cases, materials using the logo must also include Newcastle University’s logo, for which separate approval must be sought.

The University’s logo is subject to stringent usage guidelines which must be adhered to (see www.ncl.ac.uk/marketing/branding/branding/cvi/).

The University’s logo must be at least equal in size to the Institute’s logo and have at least equal prominence on any materials using both logos.

Minimum size

The words ‘Newcastle Institute for Research on Sustainability’ must always be clearly visible and legible, and the width of the logo should never be less than 35mm in its entireity: this also gives a minimum height to the ‘S’ at the beginning of the word ‘Sustainability’ of 2.5mm.

The logo must not be stretched or twisted, and the relative dimensions and spacing of the logo must remain constant, including the space between the text and the graphic element on the left.
