2011 saw the launch of the University's societal challenge theme on sustainability. As part of this launch year, a packed programme of events and other activities took place across the University. This year sees the continuation of this event stream, with events and activities aiming to showcase the world-leading research around sustainability being undertaken within the University as well as to stimulate debate, encourage new collaborations and strengthen our links with the wider community.

A number of Newcastle University researchers are working on topics relating to land management for GHG mitigation. This informal discussion afternoon will include a journal club session to set the scene, followed by several short summaries of ongoing research by researchers, with ample opportunities for exchange of ideas and experiences.

As the world's population hits 7 billion, human development is being hailed as both the cause and the solution to our population crisis. Should we be celebrating the successes of development or should we be concerned about rising inequalities across the world?
TippingPoint, in partnership with NIReS, will be holding a major national gathering of those concerned with the interface between the arts and culture on one hand, and environmental issues, particularly climate change, on the other.
