Event Review: Higher Education Advisers’ and Teachers’ Conference

13 October 2011

Date: 13 October 2011
Venue: The Great Hall, Sutherland Building, Northumbria University*
Open to: Teachers and Advisers that support Years 12 and 13 students
Number of people in attendance: 100
Lead organiser: Michael Barrass, Marketing and Communications Directorate

*The conference is organised jointly by Newcastle and Northumbria University and this year the conference took place on Northumbria University’s campus.

The feedback received for the conference was extremely positive, and delegates found the information provided very useful.

The conference programme included a keynote address from Professor Craig Mahoney, Chief Executive of the Higher Education Academy.  This address covered the importance of teaching quality in the current higher education climate.  An in-depth session regarding the changes to student finance was delivered by a member of Newcastle University’s Student Recruitment Team.  In addition, many academic colleagues and admissions tutors from both Universities also supported the conference and took part in ‘Speed Updating’ sessions.  These session provided delegates with an opportunity to find out up-to-date information and the latest developments about a range of degree programmes and subject areas.

The conference provides both universities the opportunity to communicate with some of the key influencers to prospective students.  The conference contributes to the work both universities do as it provides the opportunity to highlight the range of services we can offer to support students with their future decisions and also supports teachers and advisers so that they can confidently provide accurate and relevant information the prospective students they come into contact them.

The conference contributes to the sustainability societal theme as one of the planned outcomes of the conference was to help teachers and advisers ensure that any student regardless of their background and the educational background is able to access up-to-date information and is fully supported when applying to Higher Education or making decisions about their future.

Enough, For All, Forever
