Armed Forces Opportunities for Newcastle Students
You can sample life in the armed forces while you're a student here. This can help you to develop leadership and communication skills, and can even lead to a career after graduation.
Defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme (DTUS)
Newcastle is one of only eight UK universities taking part in the DTUS. It is a sponsorship scheme for students interested in a scientific, engineering or technical career in the armed forces or the Ministry of Defence.
You receive an annual bursary of £4,000 as well as training pay for the activities that you take part in. You can also earn a reserve forces bounty for completing a specified number of training days. You will become a member of your chosen service’s reserve forces and will hold the rank of Officer Cadet (Midshipman for Royal Navy-sponsored students).
Other opportunities include:
- The Northumbrian Universities' Officers' Training Corps (NUOTC), which gives an insight into the British Army, including attachments with units around the world.
- The Northumbrian Universities Air Squadron (NUAS) provides cadets with flying experience, as well as leadership and personal development training.
- The Northumbrian Universities' Royal Naval Unit (NURNU) provides a three-year package of training and activities in order to broaden your knowledge of the Royal Navy and its activities worldwide.
