Armed Forces

While at Newcastle, you can sample life in the armed forces. This can help to develop leadership and communication skills.

Defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme (DTUS)

Newcastle is one of only eight UK universities taking part in the DTUS. It is a sponsorship scheme for students interested in a scientific, engineering or technical career in the armed forces or the Ministry of Defence.

You receive an annual bursary of £4,000 as well as training pay for the activities that you take part in. You can also earn a reserve forces bounty for completing a specified number of training days. You will become a member of your chosen service’s reserve forces and will hold the rank of Officer Cadet (Midshipman for Royal Navy-sponsored students).

You will have the support of the DTUS support unit, Trojan Squadron. It is there to provide you with academic support as well as to help you gain an insight into military life through numerous personal development opportunities including sports, adventure training and overseas expeditions.
