This four-year degree focuses on the study of food and human nutrition. Since many of our students obtain jobs in the increasingly international food industry, you can take optional modules in economics, marketing or psychology. You also undertake a work placement in third year in the UK or abroad.

This degree is accredited by the Association for Nutrition, which means our graduates can apply for direct entry onto the UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists at the Associate level. This would then entitle you to use the letters ANutr/ APHNutr after your name, without having to go through the lengthy process of additional assessment that is required from graduates from courses that are not accredited - see the Association of Nutrition's website for further benefits of studying on an accredited course.

Our degrees are divided into Stages. Each Stage lasts for an academic year and you need to complete modules totalling 120 credits by the end of each Stage.

Work placement

Between Stages 2 and 3, you undertake a placement in an approved company or organisation. This provides an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience and provides the basis for obtaining the Licentiateship of the City and Guilds of London Institute (LCGI). This acknowledges the development of personal, transferable skills in the workplace.

Previous placements have been with Premier Foods, Kraft Foods, ASDA and the MRC Human Nutrition Research Unit in Cambridge. Some students have also undertaken placements abroad (including in the Netherlands, the Gambia and Australia).
