Environmental Science BSc Honours UCAS Code: F850  (3 years)

Course outline: The environmental impact of human society, how we manage natural resources, and the sustainability and the decreasing biodiversity of our planet are major concerns.

This degree programme provides a broad foundation of science-based skills, equipping you with an understanding of contemporary issues in environmental management and knowledge of the interactions between processes operating in the physical environment and ecosystems.

You also gain an awareness of the legislative and ethical framework within which environmental scientists operate, equipping you for careers in a range of environmental professions, particularly in areas relating to environmental protection.

Stage 1: You study soil and land resources, ecology, global environmental systems, quantitative analysis and field techniques.

Stage 2: You take compulsory modules addressing: the practice of environmental science; terrestrial ecosystems; climate and environmental change; conservation issues; environmental assessment and design, as well as optional modules. You can study land, freshwater and marine environments; pollution; and the ecology of natural and managed systems, alongside aspects of the economic, political and legislative framework for environmental management.

Between Stages 2 and 3 you can choose to take a placement year and get practical experience in the environmental sector.

Stage 3: You continue studying core modules in: tropical environments; biological conservation; ecosystems management; and sustainability assessment, as well as optional modules. You also undertake a project, which may involve scientific research in a consultancy-based investigation.

Environmental Science

Utilising the environment for food production, nature conservation and recreation, whilst at the same time managing the impact of industry upon it, requires a broad knowledge base, which considers the many and varied demands on the environment.

Our teaching team has a strong research base and is at the forefront of research at the agriculture-environment interface and in global environment and development issues. Our teaching has been recognised to be of the highest quality and we integrate fieldwork modules at each Stage of the degree, allowing students to test their skills in practice.
