Chemical Engineering BEng Honours UCAS Code: H810 (3 years)School of Chemical Engineering and Advanced Materials

Our BEng degree gives you a sound and broad chemical engineering education on which to build an exciting and rewarding career.

You follow the same programme of study outlined in our Chemical Engineering MEng Honours degree, except for the Stage 3 plant design project which reflects the Bachelor's level of the award.

Our Bachelor's level (BEng) degree is professionally accredited and highly rated but you will have to undertake some further study in your career to become a Chartered Engineer.

The Engineering Council UK recommends that UK and EU students apply for the MEng degree as this is seen as the most direct route to becoming professionally qualified.

Our degrees are divided into Stages. Each Stage lasts for an academic year and you need to complete modules totalling 120 credits by the end of each Stage.

Stage 1

Compulsory modules

Stage 2

Compulsory modules

Due to the high level of shared content between our degrees, if you pass your Stage 2 exams with an overall Stage average of 60 per cent or above, you may transfer to one of our Chemical Engineering MEng degrees for the final two years, extending your degree to four years. We offer degrees in:

Year in industry (optional)

You may choose to take an optional year out in industry after Stage 2.

This will not only enable you to earn a salary but will also equip you with key skills such as teamworking and problem solving that will make you stand out in the graduate job market.

The work you do during this year does not count directly towards your degree mark and so your year out is in addition the usual length of your programme, extending your degree to four years.

Alternatively, you can apply to transfer to our IChemE accredited Industry degree, which integrates an accredited, paid work placement into Stage 3 of your programme.

Stage 3

Compulsory modules

International students

Working with the Singapore Institute of Technology, Newcastle University also offers a full-time BEng Honours degree in Chemical Engineering in Singapore. Find out more.
