The ability to develop solutions and products that will not only meet the requirements of customers, but also delight them, is highly sought after.

This degree provides the knowledge and tools, and the practice at implementing them, to ensure that functional, effective, innovative and user-friendly products and solutions are generated and can be manufactured appropriately and profitably.

Our degrees are divided into Stages. Each Stage lasts for an academic year and you need to complete modules totalling 120 credits by the end of each Stage.

The course structure of all our Mechanical Engineering degrees is similar for the first two years. This means you have the option to transfer between all of our MEng degrees the end of Stage 2, providing you achieve a Stage average of 60 per cent.

The University has specific research strengths in design at both the Faculty and School levels (world-class Engineering Design Centre and Design Unit). These activities provide many opportunities for related final-year projects.

Examples of recent project titles include:

  • development of excavator lifting capacity software
  • design of improved rail vehicle suspension and of an autocoupler remover
  • design of a creep-feed gear grinder
