German and Politics BA Honours UCAS Code: LR22 (4 years)
Course outline: This degree combines practical language skills and an increased appreciation of Germany with the study of its politics. We also offer degrees in French and Politics and Spanish and Politics.
Subject overview:
Stage 1: You divide your time equally between practical language modules, language-related modules and politics. You develop skills in German writing, speaking and listening, whilst also consolidating your knowledge of grammar and vocabulary.
For the politics element, you can choose modules from a wide range of options in British, European and international politics, in addition to political thought. You also select from a wide range of modules in German film, cultural studies, politics, history, linguistics and literature.
Stage 2: You can choose to spend between half and two-thirds of your time on language study (and language-related modules), in addition to politics based topics such as Britain and the European Union, the Third World in global development, citizen involvement in democracy, and feminist political theory.
As in Stage 1, you have the option of complementing your practical language study with language-related modules in German history, society, film, literature and culture. You can also take an option in beginners’ Dutch.
Stage 3: You spend a year in an approved German-speaking country (as appropriate), pursuing a course of study at a university or other comparable institution. Exceptionally, you may spend the year abroad on an appropriate, approved work placement.
Stage 4: Language modules are tailored to the high levels of ability you will reach during the year abroad and include practice in advanced writing skills, translation and liaison interpreting. You also take further language- and politics-based modules in subjects such as gender and politics, religion and politics, history, cultural studies and media and may pursue a particular area of interest through writing a dissertation.
