You may decide to embark directly upon a career in translation and/or interpreting, or you could follow the tracks of some of our other Modern Languages graduates and find work in areas as diverse as tourism, marketing, management, the civil service, advertising and the media, teaching and banking.
Alternatively, if you want to study translation and interpreting further, our degree is excellent preparation for a postgraduate professional qualification.

Many School of Modern Languages graduates also choose to go into teaching, taking a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) for either primary or secondary education in the UK, or beginning careers teaching English outside this country. Others go into jobs in which their language skills are desirable, such as the media, sales, e-commerce, and finance.
The University’s Careers Service offers a lot of help and support to undergraduates planning their future, with a careers adviser specifically dedicated to supporting School of Modern Languages students.
Newcastle University consistently has one of the best records for graduate employment in the UK. 93.4% of our 2011 UK/EU graduates progressed to employment or further study within six months of graduating. More than three quarters (78.7%) of our graduates who entered employment achieved a graduate level position.
