Our degrees are divided into Stages. Each Stage lasts for an academic year and you need to complete modules totalling 120 credits by the end of each Stage.

Please be aware that programme modules do change and therefore may differ for your year of entry.

+ Stage 1

Compulsory modules

All students take modules in translating and interpreting, alongside language modules based on their current level of language skill.

Level B language modules are post-A level standard, whilst Level A modules are suitable for beginners.

You will take the following modules:

Students entering the programme with two languages at A Level or equivalent will take 20 credits of another Level B language. Otherwise, you will take 40 credits of a Level A language.

You will continue to study the second language studied at Stage 1, choosing Level B or Level C classes as applicable.

+ Stage 3

You spend your year abroad either studying at a university, working as a teaching assistant or on a work placement in a country (or countries) relevant to your degree. You may spend the whole year in a country where one of your chosen languages is spoken, or divide the year between more than one country.

If you study Chinese or Japanese you must spend the year in China or Japan at a university of other comparable institution in the relevant country. It is recommended that you use the summer vacations either side of your year abroad to visit French-, German- or Spanish-speaking countries (according to the other language(s) studied).
